Life and death are like waves on the sea,
rising and falling on an endless ocean.
We rise and fall over and over again
in the same way as waves.
But the ocean itself gets no larger or smaller,
and neither does the cycle of birth and death.
The nature of everything, not just people,
is the same as an ocean — endless, boundless,
eternally indestructible,
neither producing nor extinguishing.
In other words,
life and death are one-and-the-same.
Ven SongChol was called the ‘Living Buddha of Korea’.
He meditated intensely and realized Truth fully. Although he became the head of the Korean Buddhism he always remained very simple and stayed in his hermitage. Every visitor had to prostate 3000 times before the Buddha in the main hall for the sake of all sentient beings in order to meet the master.
